Daraniya Chair

Some objects are created to fulfill a function. Others are created to carry a story—a story where history, culture, craftsmanship, and design converge to become something far greater than a product. This armchair is the result of such a story: the first collaboration between DARANIYA, the brand dedicated to reviving Persian Royal Brocade, and RAFEL, a luxury furniture house renowned for its refined craftsmanship, developed under the Creative and Art Direction of Kian Talajouy. The project began with a simple question: Can a textile that once adorned royal courts and ceremonial spaces be reimagined as an integral element of contemporary interior design? The answer was found not in recreating the past, but in establishing a dialogue between heritage and modern craftsmanship. For this collaboration, RAFEL chose a Contemporary Neoclassical design language—a style that preserves the elegance and balance of European classical furniture while refining it through cleaner lines and modern proportions. The graceful silhouette, sculpted arms, harmonious proportions, and finely detailed wooden frame reflect a timeless aesthetic that feels equally at home in contemporary interiors. RAFEL’s commitment to excellence extends far beyond appearance. The careful selection of hardwood, precision joinery, hand-finished carving, and multiple layers of finishing demonstrate an uncompromising dedication to craftsmanship. The frame is completed in a rich Dark Walnut finish that enhances the natural character of the wood while providing a warm, sophisticated backdrop for the textile. Rather than competing with the brocade, the wood elevates it, creating a refined visual balance between material and form. At the heart of the piece lies DARANIYA’s Royal Brocade, which gives the chair its cultural identity. The textile features the traditional Eslimi (Arabesque) motif, one of the most enduring visual languages in Persian art, architecture, manuscript illumination, and decorative design. Symbolizing continuity, harmony, and perpetual growth, the pattern embodies centuries of artistic tradition. The textile measures 72 × 74 cm and was woven using the traditional Dara’i (Ikat) technique. Executed in four colors with luxurious Golabetoon (gold-wrapped metallic) wefts, it possesses a subtle brilliance that changes beautifully with light. The piece was woven in 2001–2002 (1380 SH) by the late master weaver Mashallah Enayati, whose work represents an invaluable chapter in Iran’s textile heritage. In this collaboration, the brocade is far more than upholstery, and the chair is far more than furniture. The structure provides a stage for the textile, while the textile gives the structure its identity. Together, they transform two independent disciplines—fine weaving and luxury furniture making—into a single design statement. This collaboration reflects the shared vision of both brands. DARANIYA is committed to preserving and reintroducing one of Iran’s most prestigious textile traditions to the contemporary world, while RAFEL is dedicated to creating furniture distinguished by exceptional craftsmanship, enduring quality, and timeless design. Their meeting point is not simply a product, but a collectible design object—an object equally suited to refined residences, boutique hotels, curated galleries, and private collections. Developed through the collaboration of DARANIYA and RAFEL, under the Creative and Art Direction of Kian Talajouy, this project represents more than the introduction of a new furniture piece. It expresses a design philosophy—one that believes true luxury is created when cultural heritage, master craftsmanship, and contemporary design are brought together to shape objects with lasting meaning.
